The daughter of former South African President Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her trial in the coastal city of the city of Durban.

The defendant, forty-three, is being charged over statements she published on social media in the past during deadly protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her father.

A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least three hundred killed and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been charged of inciting this unrest and is charged with accusations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public disorder.

Context of the Legal Matter

The demonstrations were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's arrest for defying a court order to give evidence at an investigation into allegations of corruption while he was in power.

She has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative earlier calling the government's case as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly claimed the charges against her were an effort to address political grievances with her father after he started his own political organization and ran against the African National Congress.

Support and Legal Defense

This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and familial harassment" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A small number of backers from her group, the political party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives attended the proceedings inside.

The defendant's representatives has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks substantial proof for a guilty verdict.
