Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and a third person who fled after the blast was found not long after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area showed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
