The Contents of the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him for good.
Editor's Note: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for the concluding episodes.
A Journey Into the Cavern
When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a fight for life.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the encounter originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the container almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
